The director is reported to have attacked two police officers at a Stowe, Vermont bar earlier this month after participating in a charity hockey game.
He was booked on charges of disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.
"I'm not taking it lightly," he told the Boston Herald. "I'm going to be doing something for the community up there to make up for it".
However the There's Something About Mary director denied he had purposefully attacked the police officers.
"It happened really fast," he said. "Nobody was hurt. It was a lot of, like, bluster. I'm embarrassed and I'm going to apologise and make sure it never happens again."
