England footballer Gerrard arrested

Liverpool and England footballer Steven Gerrard has been arrested following a brawl outside a restaurant.

Gerrard and five other men were allegedly involved in a fight outside the Lounge Inn in Southport, Merseyside in the early hours of this morning, the BBC reports.

A 34-year-old man suffered facial injuries in the assault and was taken to hospital.

"At around 2.30am this morning officers attended a disturbance at a licensed premises on Bold Street," a police spokesman said. "Six men were arrested on suspicion of section 20 assault, on Lord Street."

All six men, aged between 18 and 33, remain in police custody.

Gerrard has been capped 70 times by England, scoring 14 goals. He is Liverpool Football Club's captain and scored twice in the team's 5-1 defeat of Newcastle yesterday.

Liverpool FC declined to comment on Gerrard's arrest.
