Johansson chose Woody Allen over Bowie

Scarlett Johansson has revealed that she stood up David Bowie to work with Woody Allen.

Bowie provided backing vocals for two tracks on Johansson's recent album of Tom Waits covers Anywhere I Lay My Head, but the actress disclosed that she did not go to the recording studio to meet Bowie because she was working on Allen's Vicky Cristina Barcelona.

"Unfortunately, I was in Spain shooting when he came in," she said. "I said to Woody 'If you knew what I sacrificed to be on this set.'"

Johansson added that she often found herself puzzled by Allen's lack of pop culture knowledge.

She explained: "One day, I said something about Neil Young, and he was like 'Neil Young... Neil Young... who's Neil Young?' I was like 'Who's Neil Young?!' It's impossible."
