Poirot star David Suchet has been given the Freedom of the City of London.

The 62-year-old actor was accompanied by his wife Sheila as he picked up the honour at London's Guildhall today.

The ceremony represents one of the oldest surviving traditions in Britain and is believed to date back to 1237. Privileges associated with the Freedom include the right to herd sheep across London Bridge, carry a drawn sword and marry in St. Paul's Cathedral.

"We are absolutely thrilled to bits. What is wonderful is that I feel part of a 13th century City of London tradition. Being a Londoner, born in Paddington, I'm just so proud and it makes me feel that I really belong," he said.

Previous recipients include Winston Churchill, Princess Diana and Nelson Mandela.
