He died at his Bevely Hills home on Wednesday from "complications of advancing age".
"He was in peace," said his son-in-law Gilbert Smith. "He will be missed."
The actor's wife of 63 years, Georgiana, died last year. He is survived by four children and six grandchildren.
In the 1940s, Montalban appeared in dozens of films with stars including Clark Gable and Lana Turner. However, in his autobiography he complained that MGM never gave him a starring role, which could have made him a major star.
He later turned to theatre and TV work, where he found fame working on hit show Fantasy Island. He was also given an Emmy for his role as Chief Satangkai in How The West Was Won.
In 1982 he starred as Khan Noonien Singh in Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Kahn, which followed up a TV episode of the sci-fi franchise, also featuring Montalban.
More recently he starred in Naked Gun: From The Files Of The Police Squad and Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over.
