The pair have been named in the best actor and actress categories respectively for their roles in The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button and Changeling.
However, speaking to Entertainment Tonight, Pitt said that they are not planning any special celebration, claiming: "We've got kids to deal with."
When asked if he had expected a nomination, he replied: "Truthfully I hadn't thought about it.
"But I'm glad that it's in there because it's a film that picks up the mantle of old Hollywood and it's carrying on in that tradition. I think it's a testament to [director] David Fincher who has given years of his life to the movie."
Pitt was last nominated for an Academy Award in 1996 for his role in Twelve Monkeys. Jolie picked up the best supporting actress gong in 2000 for her performance in Girl, Interrupted.
