The actress, who has received an Oscar nomination for her performance in Vicky Cristina Barcelona, told Spanish newspaper El Pais that she felt "very alone" living in Hollywood.
"After a number of years in Los Angeles, I no longer want to live here, It will be better if I share my time between New York and Madrid, where my family is," she was quoted as saying.
The 34-year-old was reportedly prompted to relocate after striking up a friendship with Vicky director Woody Allen.
Discussing the iconic New Yorker, she said: "He says what he thinks, unlike many people that I have met in Los Angeles."
She went on to describe her Oscar nomination as "an honour", adding: "I am eternally indebted to the Academy [and] to Woody Allen who gave me this opportunity.
"I am very happy to see all the affection and congratulations I have received, especially those from Spain. Let's hope I can bring it home."
Cruz was nominated for an Academy Award in 2007 for her role in Volver.
