Earlier this week, paramedic Tarino Lightbourne was arrested after he attempted to sell a "refusal of transport" document signed by Travolta as he treated the teenager.
However, senior assistant commissioner of police Marvin Dames has revealed that the document at the centre of the extortion conspiracy was irrelevant to Jett's death.
"The document did not apply in the Travolta case...because he was very ill, and so the only alternative would be to take him to the hospital," he told People. "Refusal to transport documents are for cases involving minor injuries...It waives responsibility on the part of the hospital.
"There's no evidence to support that there was any effort to avoid medical treatment. Lightbourne said that himself in several interviews."
The extortion plot came to light when former Bahamian senator Pleasant Bridgewater contacted Travolta's lawyers and said that her client Lightbourne wished to sell the document. The actor later lodged a complaint with the Bahamian police.
"The complaint states the request was for $25 million," said Dames. "At the time, she represented the young man. She would have made the request."
Dames added that the authenticity of the document had not been confirmed because they could not locate the original.
Jett Travolta passed away on January 2 after suffering a seizure at his family's Bahamas home.
