The footballer, who is on loan to AC Milan from Los Angeles Galaxy, is said to have been arguing with wife Victoria over whether to uproot their family back to Europe from America.
A source told the Sunday Mirror that the couple have now made the "painful decision" for Beckham to remain in the Italian city.
Victoria and their sons Brooklyn, Romeo, and Cruz, will stay in Los Angeles.
"There were a lot of tears. She was really worried about leaving David behind in Italy," the insider said.
Beckham is keen to make the move so that he can play for England in the 2010 World Cup after manager Fabio Capello recommended that he remain in Italy to ensure his game is at its best.
