The alleged incident took place at 12.30am on Sunday in a parked car at Hollywood's Hancock Park. According to Los Angeles police, R&B star Brown and an unidentified woman "became involved in an argument".
Brown, the boyfriend of Rihanna, was freed on $50,000 bail at 8.35pm yesterday with a March 5 court date set, CNN reports.
"After stopping his car, Brown and the woman got out and the argument escalated," said a police statement.
Brown was not at the scene when officers arrived following a 911 call.
"Detectives investigating the alleged domestic violence felony battery booked him for criminal threats," the statement continued. "At the time the case is presented to the Los Angeles County district attorney's office, additional charges may be filed."
Brown and Rihanna had been scheduled to attend the Grammys on Sunday night but both withdrew from the event.
A spokesman for Rihanna said that the 'Disturbia' singer "is well. Thank you for concern and support."
Executives from Brown's record label declined to comment.
