Speaking to Parents magazine, the actress described an incident where she took her nine-year-old daughter Ava to see Carrie Underwood perform.
"She said, 'Mum I really appreciate you taking me to the concert, but will you please not embarrass me in front of Carrie Underwood by singing because she's a real singer and you're just, like a movie singer'," said Witherspoon, who won an Oscar for playing June Carter in Walk The Line.
"Realising you're not anything special to the kids is always a great reminder that you're just a regular person, a regular embarrassing old mum," she added.
When asked if her kids are aware of her occupation, she replied: "They know what I do for a living - that I'm an actress. But they haven't seen any of my movies. Yet."
Witherspoon has children Ava, nine, and Deacon, five, with ex-husband Ryan Philippe.
