American gossip websites have claimed that a text message on Chris Brown's phone was behind his alleged altercation with Rihanna on Sunday.

According to TMZ, police sources have revealed that a text sent to Brown from a woman sparked a confrontation between the lovers. The message apparently included a reference to the pair "hooking up" later.

Rihanna was admitted to hospital after she was allegedly beaten up by Brown. Various media outlets are reporting that her injuries were "horrific".

The R&B star's grandma issued a statement yesterday saying that the singer is "doing well" after her hospital treatment. Her representatives have not commented on rumours surrounding the incident, but thanked fans for their "concern and support".

Brown was been released on $50,000 bail following his arrest for a domestic violence felony and is due in court on March 5.
