Shepard sorry for drink driving

Sam Shepard has admitted that he drove under the influence of alcohol and promised a judge that he will not reoffend.

The American actor and playwright was arrested in January after police said he was driving at 46mph in a 30mph zone in the town of Normal, Illinois. A breath test indicated that his blood-alcohol level was double the legal limit.

PA reports that the Black Hawk Down star said sorry to a judge during a hearing in Bloomington, Illinois, and added that he never intends to drive under the influence again.

Shepard said that he stops in the area when travelling from his home in Kentucky to visit family in Minnesota.

The 65-year-old was fined $600 (£422) and ordered to carry out 100 hours of community service. He must also finish an alcohol treatment programme and has been placed on 24 months' supervision.
