Speaking to The Daily Telegraph, the actress suggested that three-year-old Matilda would face too much scrutiny and pressure growing up in her father's shadow in Los Angeles.
"I wouldn’t raise [her] there. For all the obvious reasons - being the daughter of… Being an actor’s daughter," she explained.
"It’s a town that’s about one thing and I want her to have options," she continued, adding that she hopes the youngster will become a doctor.
The Brokeback Mountain star, who currently lives with Matilda in New York, revealed that she "couldn't work" following the death of her ex-boyfriend last year.
"I felt burnt out, I still feel that, but I’m coming back to my wits, little by little," she said. "Ultimately I am not yet ready to work. I’ve actually really been enjoying not working… I guess everybody enjoys that."
Her new film Wendy And Lucy opens in the UK on March 6.
