Jade Goody: Reality TV history

Jade Goody's very public battle with cancer has meant that the Bermondsey-raised 27-year-old has rarely been out of the headlines in 2009. So much so, that it's easy to forget what actually made her famous in the first place - reality TV. DS takes a look back at Goody's reality TV highs and lows and charted her story from "dental nurse" to Living TV regular and successful businesswoman.
Big Brother
Jade Goody entered the Big Brother house on May 24, 2002, when she was introduced to the British public as a "dental nurse from Bermondsey in London" with a phobia of tomato ketchup. In her VT, she told viewers that she was "bubbly" and "very outspoken" and lived up to her billing, becoming one of the biggest stars of the third series. Her notable moments in the house included spats with Sophie Pritchard and Adele Roberts, stripping naked after an evening of heavy drinking, and her lack of general knowledge (Quote: "Rio De Janeiro - ain't that a person?"). Many expected her to be voted off in week six, but she was saved ahead of her house rival Adele. She eventually left the house on Day 64 in fourth place, with 20% of the final vote.
Back To Reality
Goody was the bookmakers' favourite to triumph when she returned for a second stab at living in a reality TV house. One of 12 reality TV contestants taking part in the show, she managed to steal most of the headlines in the unsuccessful Channel 5 show. During her 20-day stint she was controversially visited by lover Jeff Brazier, rowed with most of her housemates and was dramatically dashed to hospital after suffering a burst cyst. Her now-famous Jade-isms included admitting that she believed it was possible to drive to Ireland and asking if wood pigeons were a breed of ferret. She eventually finished in fourth place behind Driving School's Maureen Rees, fellow BB star Craig Phillips and eventual winner James Hewitt.
Celebrity Big Brother
Jade's most famous and controversial reality TV appearance came on Celebrity Big Brother 5 in 2007. The former housemate was a surprise entrant with boyfriend Jack Tweed and mother Jackiey Budden on Day 3. The Goody clan's arrival immediately provoked a reaction, leading in part to the departures of Donny Tourette and Ken Russell. More significantly her behaviour towards Bollywood star Shilpa Shetty led to an angry response from viewers. Goody, Tweed, glamour model Danielle Lloyd and singer Jo O'Meara were accused of bullying and racism. Jade was kicked off the show on Day 17 after getting over 80% of the public vote. She exited without a live crowd due to fears for her safety. Shilpa, who has said repeatedly that she forgives Jade for her actions, went on to win the show.
Living
Away from Big Brother, Jade's most successful reality TV work has stemmed from her involvement with Living TV. After her first stint in BB, she was granted her own shows Jade's Salon, Jade's PA and Just Jade, which brought Goody's colourful private life into the nation's living rooms and gave Living some of its highest ever ratings. The fallout from Celeb BB led to Goody being axed by the broadcaster, but when it emerged she was suffering from cervical cancer in the summer of 2008, it reunited with the reality TV veteran. Living With Jade Goody, Jade: Bride To Be Jade and Jade's Progress have covered in intimate detail Goody's battle with illness and her attempts to provide financial security for her children after her death.
