Karl Bishop, 22, was convicted of stabbing the 18-year-old five times outside the Metro bar in South East London last year.
He will serve a minimum of 20 years in prison before he is considered for parole. He was also given three concurrent life sentences for wounding three of Knox's friends.
Sentencing Bishop, Mr Justice Bean said that his "lack of regret let alone remorse was truly chilling".
He added: "I do not think it is proved that you intended to kill Robert Knox. The truth is that you simply could not care less whether you killed him or not."
Bishop, of Sidcup, had denied murder and other counts of wounding, claiming that he had been acting in self defence when Knox died.
The Old Bailey had heard that Knox, from Swanley, Kent, had been stabbed trying to protect his younger brother Jamie from Bishop.
Hearing the verdict, Knox's father Colin told Reuters: "We are enormously relieved justice has been done, although there is nothing that will compensate for the shattering sense of loss."
It has since emerged that Bishop was previously under investigation for a knifepoint robbery but no charges were brought.
Knox had just finished filming the role of Marcus Belby in the forthcoming Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince.
