'Ghost: The Musical' to open in West End

Rex Features

A stage adaptation of 1990 film Ghost will open in the West End in 2010, according to the London Theatre Guide.

The Oscar-winning romantic drama starred Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore and Whoopi Goldberg.

A fantasy story about the power of love, the film told the story of a couple called Sam and Molly, who are mugged on their way home one evening. Sam gets murdered in the attack and is then trapped as a ghost between this world and the next.

Afterwards, he discovers that Molly is in danger and in a desperate attempt to save her, he seeks the help of phony psychic Oda Mae Brown.

The music will be produced by Dave Stewart and Glen Ballard, while Bruce Joel Rubin is penning the script.

"Ghost was a landmark film. An unexpected combination of supernatural thriller and romance entwined," said director Matthew Warchus.

"It is the kind of powerful, direct and uplifting story which lends itself well to being reborn as a musical. And the melodic strength and exciting driving energy of Dave Stewart and Glen Ballard's music will, I believe, provide exactly the right added engine to the narrative, playing a key role in refreshing the source material for a new audience.

"It is an exciting challenge and we have assembled a very strong artistic team to achieve this goal."
