Paul Gascoigne has revealed that he nearly died in rehab last year.

The former England footballer admitted that his heart stopped beating "a few times" during his three-week stint in the Gloucestershire centre.

The star added that his spate of health scares had affected his father's health, who collapsed with worry after visiting his son.

Speaking in an interview with Sky News, Gascoigne went on to frankly discuss his previous violent relationship with ex-wife Sheryl.

"If you are sitting in a restaurant and somebody calls your mum a whore, which she did, I don't like that," he added.

"And yes, I got hold of her arms and I did put my head against her head. I didn't headbutt her but I threw her to the floor. I was disgusted with myself for what I did."

Gascoigne recently claimed that he is "on the mend" and that his love for his children pushed him towards sobriety.
