Chris Tarrant has described his recent arrest as a "big misunderstanding", admitting that the row happened because he and his girlfriend were "a bit tipsy".
The Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? host was arrested on suspicion of common assault at his Surrey home yesterday, in relation to an alleged domestic incident that had occurred at the property.
Speaking to reporters, the 62-year-old explained that he and partner Jane Bird, 46, had been arguing in the driveway of his apartment block after returning from a Tina Turner concert at London's O2 arena.
"We had a row - it happens. We were both a bit tipsy, we'd had some fine wine," he said. "We might have had a few bottles. Someone called the police, but I want to emphasise that absolutely nothing physical happened."
He continued: "There was some shouting and arguing but I absolutely did not try to push her out of the front door."
Tarrant, who currently fronts ITV's The Colour Of Money, added that he spent two hours in a cell before being allowed to leave.
A police spokesperson has confirmed that a man in his early 60s was arrested in connection to an alleged domestic incident but was later released without charge.
