Vanessa Redgrave sang a lullaby and stroked dying daughter Natasha Richardson's face shortly before her life support machine was switched off.

The 72-year-old chose the Sound Of Music melody 'Edelweiss', a song which she performed at her daughter's first marriage to Robert Fox in 1990, reports the Daily Mail.

Richardson passed away in a New York hospital on Wednesday at the age of 45 with her mother, husband Liam Neeson and sister Joely Richardson by her side.

A coroner later ruled that she died from internal bleeding caused by a head injury sustained while skiing at Mont Tremblant, Quebec.

Broadway theatres dimmed their lights for a minute last night in honour of the actress.
