Appearing on BBC Breakfast this morning, the 38-year-old flashed her engagement ring after being congratulated by co-presenter Bill Turnbull, saying: "Officially, I'm now engaged. It's very exciting."
Heron, who currently works as a security consultant, proposed to Silverton with an ethically-sourced Forevermark ring at the Piazza Del Popola in Rome during a romantic trip to the city last weekend.
A representative added that he had sought Silverton's father's permission before popping the question.
The presenter met Heron, 41, on a course for BBC journalists reporting from war zones and they rekindled their romance in January following a brief separation.
The couple sparked speculation of a possible engagement earlier this month, when Silverton was reportedly spotted trying on rings in London.
