The model and actress, 39, passed away in 2007 following a prescription drug overdose. A subsequent investigation ruled that her cause of death was accidental.
However, a spokesperson for Fort Lauderdale's State Attorney has told E! News that officials will reexamine the circumstances surrounding her death after attorney Howard Stern and two doctors were charged with fraudulently prescribing her thousands of pills.
"Our prosecutors have met with representatives of the Los Angeles District Attorney's Office and the California Department of Justice and discussed the evidence they have turned up in their investigation," said Ron Ishoy.
"We are now investigating that evidence to see where it might lead in relation to Ms. Smith's death."
Legal experts have suggested that officials might reopen the case if they find evidence to suggest that the illicit drugs were linked to Smith's eventual death.
