Speaking on BBC Radio 1's Edith Bowman Show, the actor suggested that some newspapers were becoming too focused on famous faces and less interested in hard news.
"I don't buy them...If I buy a newspaper I want to be educated - you know, there's a war on in Iraq, there's kids being shot in the street. I want to be informed," he explained.
Discussing the media's fascination with his personal life, he added: "It's kind of eased off a little bit now, but listen, there are far worse things in life. If you've got a camera, go to a war zone and tell a story."
Ifans's latest movie The Boat That Rocked is released on Friday.
