Robyn Gibson cited "irreconcilable differences" on the papers filed at Los Angeles Superior Court on Monday. Responding, the Passion Of The Christ star admitted that the couple had been separated since August 26, 2006.
In a joint statement, the couple said: "Throughout our marriage and separation we have always strived to maintain the privacy and integrity of our family and will continue to do so."
Gibson, 53, shares seven children with his wife. Six of the children are adults, however Robyn has asked for joint custody of their ten-year-old son Tom.
The actor's personal fortune is estimated at around £600 million, although it is unclear how the couple's assets will be divided.
