Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts is battling with throat cancer, the News of the World reported today.
The star, 63, learnt of his condition after undergoing an exploratory operation last month and is now having weekly radiotherapy treatment. He is said to be "upbeat" in the face of the news and is "determined" to stay fit and alive.
"He's as tough as old boots. If anyone can get through this, he can," a friend told the newspaper.
"Of course it's a worrying time, but Charlie is being incredibly upbeat and is absolutely willing himself to make a full and complete recovery. He has talked to the rest of the band about it and they've all been incredibly supportive."
A spokesman for the Stones confirmed that Watts has been undergoing radiotherapy and added that he would be back at work later in the year.
