DS Fantasies: The new 'Ghostbusters'

Vaughn's recent turns in tacky festive frolics Four Christmases and Fred Claus may prompt many to sneer at the suggestion he deserves a crack at the legendary comedy franchise. However, we reckon Vaughn's lackadaisical approach to life would make him the perfect man to take over the baton from Dr Venkman. The 6ft5 comic's legendary wise-cracking roles in Swingers, Dodgeball and Old School more than make up for his recent indiscretions in our eyes. Anyway, even the legendary Billy Murray has some turkeys in his locker (*cough* Garfield *cough*).

Vaughn would bring in the box office bucks, so for our second choice we've gone for a less well known name with the American Office's John Krasinski a.k.a. Jim Halpert. Krasinski has a habit of stealing the show from Steve Carrell in Scranton, Pennsylvania, so why not have him duelling with Aykroyd for the bumbling nice guy role? He's not a bad bet for the job either, with Office scribes Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg signed up to pen the third flick. We reckon he'd look pretty dashing with a Proton Pack at the head of the Ectomobile as well.

Like Vaughn, he may have damaged his credibility with a recent outing (Richard Curtis's The Boat That Rocked has a lot to answer for), but we're choosing to focus instead on the New Zealand stand-up comic's performance as the bumbling music manager Murray Hewitt in HBO's Flight Of The Conchords. We'd love to see him try to helm the Ghostbusters gang in the style of one of his legendary band meetings and we reckon he'd provide a good funnyman ying to Vaughn and Krasinki's straight-men yang.

Bill Murray said in a recent interview that he'd love to see some female Ghostbusters, so who are we to argue with the great man? And who better to bring some estrogen to the world of Ghostbusting than 30 Rock's Liz Lemon, the world's finest Sarah Palin impersonator and SNL legend Tina Fey? While American TV's hottest comedy talent has little big screen experience, we're more than confident that she could hold her own when the ectoplasm begins to fly.
Who do you think should star in the new Ghostbusters? Would you have Judd Apatow or Ben Stiller's gang, or maybe you think the '80s classic should be left alone? Post your views below!

What would Ghostbusters as a company be like now? An international ghost hunting franchise or a haven for failed parapsychology students? A team of slacker generation Y ghostbusters sounds feasible. A collaboration of Judd Apatow and Harold Ramis is the way to go; John C Reilly, Steve Carrell, Seth Rogen, Paul Rudd, Mila Kunis, Jonah Hill, Justin Long etc etc Russell Brand even? If Brand wants to succeed in Hollywood, as a Brit he has to earn his stripes as a Baddie in a major movie. It's the law or something.. Could this be his film?

I think Tina Fey would be absolutely fantastic. I'm definitely seeing where you are coming from with the others digitalspy. They all seem reminiscent of the humour from the first two films, the loveable underdogs. To add to the comment previous, I'm not sure Russell Brand would work in the franchise. I always see the Ghostbusters as an ensemble comedy whereas Brand has a way of making anything he is in a one man show.
