Freddie Fuller suffered "appalling injuries" after allegedly being sliced with a machete and beaten up outside a Hampshire pub in December 2007, Winchester Crown Court was told.
Prosecutor Michael Butt said that Fuller, who spent five hours in intensive care, endured a "savage, vicious and sustained attack" by Jimmy Wenman on Christmas Eve sixteen months ago.
A witness described Fuller's bloodied arm as looking like a "leg of lamb" and allegedly overheard Wenman threatening to kill Fuller.
The defendant denies wounding with intent.
Fuller, who split up with the Sugababes singer last month, will not give evidence at the case, which is expected to last seven days.
