Stephen Fry has been put forward as a modern-day patron saint of England.

The comic and TV presenter was voted as a replacement for St. George in a survey of 7,000 MySpace users.

Among other suggestions for a "radical refresh" of the national day included the use of the Sex Pistol's 1977 single 'God Save The Queen' as the English anthem.

Most of the social networking site users questioned also agreed that April 23 should become a national holiday and should be more widely celebrated to ensure that it remains relevant.
