The actress and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador is undertaking the fast to show support for the people of Darfur after the Sudanese government expelled 13 aid agencies last month.
The 64-year-old told People that she has never engaged in anything as physically challenging before and voiced her fears about the process. "I don't know what it will do to me physically or to my mind. But that's okay. More than a million people may die, what does it matter if I am scared or not," she said.
Ahead of the strike, which will start on Monday and include a diet of only water, Farrow has gained 9lbs and sought medical advice. She said that she hopes to last for three weeks but will have to stop if blood tests show any organ damage.
Explaining her decision to fast, Farrow added: "I don't want to sound presumptuous or even assume that anyone will care at all, but facing the grimmest of realities, I just don't see how I can join the multitudes and watch a million people die."
