The brother of England footballer Jermain Defoe has died after being attacked in East London, reports The Sun.

Jade, 26, sustained a fractured skull and brain damage in the alleged assault, which took place near Leytonstone High Road on Monday afternoon.

A police source told the tabloid: "We fully expect this to be a murder inquiry."

The Tottenham striker and the rest of the family are said to be devastated and are awaiting the results of a post-mortem, which was expected to take place this morning.

A 28-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday on suspicion of perverting the course of justice and was later freed on bail. He was re-arrested yesterday over the attack itself.
