The Broadway play was recognised by the Drama Desk organisation of New York-based editors, reporters and theatre critics for its annual awards, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Stars Allison Janney, Stephanie J. Block and Megan Hilty were nominated for outstanding actress in a musical, while the play itself is up for outstanding musical among other accolades.
The original movie starred Dolly Parton, Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda as three female office workers who plot revenge on their sexist boss. Parton wrote the score for the Broadway version.
The previous record holders were The Secret Garden, Ragtime, The Producers, Hairspray and The Drowsy Chaperone, which netted 14 nominations apiece.
Other nominees for the awards include Shrek The Musical, Billy Elliot, Irving Berlin’s White Christmas and the revival of Hair.
The ceremony will be held on May 17 at LaGuardia Concert Hall in the Lincoln Centre.
