Two people accused of attempting to extort money from John Travolta in the aftermath of his teenage son's death have pleaded not guilty, reports The AP.

Former Bahamian senator Pleasant Bridgewater and ambulance driver Tarino Lightbourne denied claims that they demanded $25 million from the star in exchange for concealing a document relating to his son's treatment.

Both individuals will remain free on bail, with Lightbourne no longer required to report to the police daily. A trial date has been set for September 21.

Bahamian police have claimed that Bridgewater contacted Travolta, telling him that Lightbourne was willing to sell a "refusal of transport" document signed by the actor as his son was being treated.

It later emerged that the document at the centre of the plot was irrelevant to the teenager's death.

Jett Travolta, 16, passed away in January after suffering a seizure at his family's home in the Bahamas.
