Oprah Winfrey has apologised to author James Frey for criticising him over allegations that he fabricated part of his memoir, reports Vanity Fair.

Winfrey had touted Frey's autobiography as a one of her "book club" choices in 2005, after which it became a bestseller.

However, she admonished the writer on her show in 2006 amid allegations that he made up portions of A Million Little Pieces, saying that she "felt really duped" and accusing him of betraying his readers.

Frey said of the apology: "It was a nice surprise to hear from her, and I really appreciated the call and the sentiment."

Winfrey's spokeswoman Angela DePaul confirmed that she had called Frey to apologise.
