The How I Met Your Mother star has had experience in theatre after playing leading roles in productions of Rent, Assassins, Cabaret and Proof, E! reports.
The actor is also currently producing a theatrical mystery show titled Accomplice: Hollywood.
The awards will be broadcast live on CBS from Radio City Music Hall in New York on June 7.
Geoffrey Rush, James Gandolfini, Jeff Daniels, Jane Fonda, Marcia Gay Harden and Hope Davis are all among the nominees for the Broadway award.
