Jones claims self-defence in bar brawl

Vinnie Jones has claimed that he was acting in self-defence when he punched a man during a bar brawl in South Dakota.

The British star, 44, was taken to hospital after being hit in the face with a glass during the fight, which reportedly started after he demanded to use a pool table at the Sioux Falls lodge last December.

Witnesses had initially suggested that Jones took offence to being recognised for his part in X-Men: The Last Stand rather than one of his more significant roles.

Speaking to the court, alleged victim Juan Barrerra claimed that he had been punched by Jones after trying to get out of his way en route to the bathroom. His lawyer added that it had been an "unprovoked attack".

However, an attorney for Jones has accused Barrerra of mocking his client's accent and age, saying that the star had "used very reasonable force in an attempt to protect himself when he finally could".

Barrerra is suing for lost wages, medical bills and pain and suffering.

Jones, who was present in court, is charged with three misdemeanour assaults and could face up to one year in prison and a $1,000 fine. The trial continues.
