The Girls Aloud star, who appeared in Brit flick Free Fall earlier this year, is said to have impressed producers at a recent audition.
"Sarah has auditioned for the role and is about to be signed. She will play a new girl at St Trinian's who gets herself into a bit of trouble," a source told The Mail On Sunday.
According to reports, former O.C. actress Mischa Barton lost out in the running to play the part.
St Trinian's: The Legend Of Fritton's Gold will be directed by the original's Oliver Parker and Barnaby Thompson, and is expected to be released later in the year.
Girls Aloud recorded the theme tune and made a brief cameo appearance in 2008's St. Trinian's.
