The Titanic director has been named in the case after one of his staff members crashed a car into a utility pole that led to the blackout, Contact Music reports.
Western General Insurance Company has claimed that Oscar Escalante cost their company a loss of business with his careless driving.
The vehicle that Escalante drove at the time of the accident was registered to Cameron's home address. Both men are being sued for negligence, while the firm's bosses are seeking $125,000 (£83,000) in restitution for the business they lost.
Cameron’s sci-fi film Avatar is released in cinemas on December 18, and will receive a three-month run on IMAX screens in the US.
