The Chinese star appeared in more than 350 films throughout his career and is best-known for his role in Bruce Lee's Enter The Dragon in 1973, BBC News reports.
Kien played the one-handed criminal mastermind Han in the movie. At the time of shooting, he spoke no English so instead mouthed his lines as best he could for the producers to dub later.
In his 50-year career, Kien worked with some of Hong Kong's most well-known actors, including Chow Yun Fat. He also made more than 80 pictures about Chinese folk hero Wong Fei-hong.
The Hong Kong secretary for commerce and economic development said that the city has lost "an outstanding performing arts talent".
Kien died on Wednesday at a Hong Kong hospital with his children by his side.
