Max Drummey has apologised for sarcastically claiming that his failed marriage to Peaches Geldof was a "publicity stunt".

During a gig by his band Chester French, the guitarist joked that Geldof was on his "personal payroll".

He also expressed his support for fellow musician Chris Brown for allegedly "hurting women".

In a new statement, Drummey said: "My comments made regarding my marriage were not intended to be taken seriously. I apologise for those comments."

Regarding his reference to Brown, he said that his words were "stupid and obviously false".

Drummey added: "These statements reflect neither reality nor my opinion. It was wrong to make them. I am sorry."
