The singer-songwriter told BBC's Panorama that he accepts the "double-edged sword" for those who court fame, but added that entertainers do not initially realise the full extent of their "powerlessness" in the media.
Doherty said: "In London, they get carried away and there is more of them and they encourage each other. Seeing outside Amy Winehouse's house, it was murder. It was like London Zoo really.
"There's this girl in a house on her own or with a couple of friends and there's 30 blokes outside and you can hear them talking 24-hours a day and you can hear their voices outside. It doesn't make for a comfortable scene. It's a weird, dark, twisted, ugly world."
Of his own situation, he added: "You don't have to be the smartest person in the world to be able to escape their intrusions. They give up after a while.
"You can't turn up at a famous nightclub or restaurant and get annoyed at photographers there. If they're sticking cameras in your grandmother's bathroom window, that's a bit different.
"Since I've stopped going out with Kate Moss it's been a complete turn down of temperature of an oven, thankfully. For someone in her position it's ridiculous, it's hardcore."
