Jonathan Ross was suspended from the BBC for three months after he and Russell Brand left obscene messages on Andrew Sachs's answering machine during a radio programme.
Paul told thelondonpaper that he first found out about the incident by reading about it in the press.
He said: "People started asking me for comments. I was away, so no-one could get hold of me anyway. I texted him and wished him good luck.
"I didn't really laugh, because the trouble is when you read about anything, the newspaper has got an agenda and that is to sensationalise it as much as possible to sell more copies."
He added: "In a way, I'm almost more interested in the way the newspapers approached it."
