Robert Redford has admitted that he once played a prank on Paul Newman involving a smashed-up car, it has been reported.

The actor, who was friends with his Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid co-star, revealed that he had grown so weary of Newman’s sports car racing he had a demolished vehicle delivered to his home, Contactmusic reports.

He said: "Paul drove me crazy talking about racing all of the time... It just bored me to tears.

"So I went to a junkyard and said, 'Do you have a destroyed sports car and can you wrap it up, put a ribbon around it and leave it at Newman's house?"

The 'Cat On A Hot Tin Roof' actor, in turn, had the pile of junk made into a garden sculpture.

Newman passed away last September at the age of 83.
