The actress, a scientist from NASA and around two dozen other people were detained by police after they blocked a road near a coal processing plant in Raleigh County.
Hannah, 48, had been protesting mountaintop removal mining, a process that involves blasting the summit or summit ridge of a mountain to expose coal seams.
The group was among hundreds of protesters who rallied outside a nearby school before marching to the plant and attempting to enter it.
Police have said that around 30 people were charged with misdemeanour offences of obstruction and impeding traffic.
