The relatives were concerned that the late singer was dependent on prescription drugs and attempted the interference in Las Vegas, says People.
"The family believes Michael is addicted," an insider said. "There was an intervention in Las Vegas. Janet was on the phone, but Randy, Jackie and Rebbie were there in person.
"Michael got p**sed off. He said he wasn't on drugs. But they didn't believe him."
Another source claimed that the family put the blame on an aide to the 50-year-old that was supplying him with drugs from multiple doctors.
"[The aide] has contacts wherever they are," they said. "In addition to consuming alcohol, Jackson takes straight morphine, Demerol and opiates like Oxycontin. He also takes Valium and Xanax."
It has been suggested that Jackson was given an injection of Demerol by his doctor which can trigger cardiac arrest. Los Angeles police are reportedly hunting for the medical practitioner.
Family attorney Brian Oxman told CNN that the star could have died following a prescription drug overdose, and likened the situation to that of the late Anna Nicole Smith.
