Smokey Robinson opens Jackson memorial

Soul legend Smokey Robinson has opened the Michael Jackson public memorial by reading messages from Diana Ross and Nelson Mandela.

Jackson had stated in his will that he wanted Ross to take care of his children in the event of his mother Katherine being unable to do so.

Robinson read Ross's words: "Michael wanted me to be there for his children, and I hope I will be if they ever need me."

The message from former president of South Africa Mandela described Jackson as a "giant and legend in the music industry".
