The 79-year-old Bafta winner fell at his West Country home several weeks ago, but only checked into hospital after realising that the pain was not subsiding.
According to The Sun, Woodward's hip was broken and will need replacing.
His agent Janet Glass said that the actor is in "very good shape" apart fom the injury. His upcoming theatre tour in Love Letters with wife Michelle Dotrice has been postponed until 2010.
Woodward made a cameo in EastEnders earlier this year as Tommy Clifford.
