The actor, 48, has been cast in the role immortalised on the big screen by late actor Anthony Quinn in 1964, Contactmusic reports.
Banderas said: "I want to go back to theatre because it is my main source, I'm more a theatre actor than a film actor."
The star of the film adaptation of Evita had previously won praise for his stage work as the lead in the Broadway play Nine, which is being made into a movie musical co-starring Fergie of the Black Eyed Peas.
It was recently announced that Banderas will portray a private detective in search of a missing stripper in the Big Bang.
