The My Sister’s Keeper star revealed that the love she saw between her mum and dad gave her the determination to try her hand at acting, Fox News reports.
She said: "It's a bond that is so true, so pure and so powerful, it is the most beautiful and inspiring thing that I have ever witnessed - the eternal love that my mum and dad shared.
"It was what has given me the strength and courage to live this extraordinary life and it is what powers the light that burns inside of me."
Diaz's father Emilio died suddenly from pneumonia last April at the age of 58.
She added: "I was very fortunate to have a very wonderful, supportive family who instilled a great work ethic in me and to treat other people the way you want to be treated and it sticks with you. Teach your kids well."
It was recently reported that the actress received a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame.
