'Singing' Simpson embarrassed on 'SNL'

Ashlee Simpson was left red-faced after making an embarrassing appearance on Saturday Night Live.

During Simpson's second 'live' performance on the show, she was supposed to showcase her new single, Autobiography. However, as the band started up the audience were treated to recorded vocals to the song she had performed earlier in the evening, Pieces Of Me, whilst Simpson pranced about the stage without even pretending to sing either song. The singer looked stunned for a while then left the stage before the band stopped playing.

"I feel so bad," she said. "My band started playing the wrong song. I didn't know what to do, so I thought I'd do a hoe-down," ran Ashlee's excuse.

The incident led to speculation that the backing vocal was either there to cover up holes in Ashlee's singing skills, or to be lip-synced over throughout. Apparently neither is standard practice on the show.
