The 79-year-old has been caring for the popstar’s three children - Prince Michael, 12, Paris Michael Katherine, 11, and 7-year-old Prince Michael II (also known as Blanket) - while she was named their guardian in the singer’s will.
A source close to the Jackson family told People that the reality of Michael’s death has begun to affect his mum.
"It's finally hit her. She's been crying a lot. Her eyes are constantly red. She can't believe Michael is gone."
Katherine is said to be a resource of courage for her grandchildren in the wake of their losing their father.
"She feels horrible for those children. [But] she's determined to remain strong for them," the insider added.
It was suggested earlier that the caretaker of Jackson’s children paid his ex-wife Debbie Rowe the sum of $4 million (£2.4 million) for custodial rights of the two eldest children, which she later said was a false rumour.
A custody hearing will take place on July 20.
